Friday March 16th

  • Students Dismissed at 11:52
  • Spring Production Set up in Afternoon.

 Special note:

  • We have received a few inquiries regarding our early dismissals on Friday this month. This year is a bit of an anomaly with our four Fridays in March. We have to balance the number of hours of instruction that students  receive and  hours that teachers teach. When teachers are asked to give up their evenings with their families for Open Houses and Conferences we are required to take that into consideration. We also work with a variety of Unions that have agreements on the number of hours that staff can be asked to work. We have tried to coordinate any “time off on Fridays” to coincide with Edgemont with Friday afternoons. This Friday is a PD day where 29 staff members will be receiving their First Aid Training for the safety of all students. Next Friday is set aside for setting up for our Spring Production and the fourth Friday is a non-student day set by CBE. We will look at this with next year’s calendar and try to avoid the 4 Fridays in a row.
  • Singing in the Rain – Spring Production tickets are available for March 19 and 20 evening performances.

Thursday February 15th – Teachers’ Convention – School Closed

Friday February 16th – Teachers’  Convention – School Closed

Monday February 19th – Family Day – No School.

Special notes:

  • Just a quick note to parents that in the unlikely event that Tom Baines School or any other CBE school were to be closed for any reason, you would receive an email from the CBE  to notify you. That is another reason it is very important that you keep your information and email address up to date. The only person that can close a school for any reason is the Chief Superintendent of CBE.
  • We continue to have issues with parents dropping off their children in the school parking lot in the morning before school. This past week was especially problematic. Parents can ONLY come into the parking lot between 9:00 AM  – 3:00PM. Any other time you  MUST drop off and pick up your child on Edgepark Blvd. This is for safety reasons and the fact that my staff of 55 must get into the parking lot.

  • We are consulting with the City of Calgary Police and City of Calgary Parking authority with the possibility of issuing tickets or fines to those that do not follow the restrictions. Every child’s safety must come before convenience. Thank you to those many parents that have been following our request.
  • The Calgary Board of Education are beginning budget deliberations and are seeking your input into next year’s budget priorities. They really do want to hear from parents. Please go online and express your opinions:

Thurs. Feb 8, 2018 School is OPEN today Extra Curricular Activities CANCELLED

Tom Baines School is OPEN today.  Please understand that the only person who makes the decision to close schools in the Calgary Board of Education is the Chief Superintendent. We have had many phone calls today inquiring as to why Mr. Petrowitsch has not closed the school. It is not his decision to make.  The decision to send your student to school or not is up to the parent/guardian.  If you choose to keep your student at home please call the school attendance line at  403-777-7190 ext 1.

ALL after school activities for today are CANCELLED.  This includes the Learning Commons, basketball games, Singing in the Rain Rehearsal, Invent Club, etc. Students are expected to go home immediately after school.

  • On Friday February 2nd you should have received your child’s Report Card, Request for Complimentary Courses 2018-19 and an IPP if your child has one. Please sign and return the envelope and IPP’s to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Complimentary Course request sheets are due back to your child’s BOA teacher by Tuesday February 13th. This is earlier than past years as the CBE is moving to a new  Student Information System called Power School. This change over requires that we input the data much earlier this year only. Please read the course descriptions with your child, rank order all the choices, then sign the form and have your child bring it to their BOA teacher. Forms not handed in on time may not get processed until August.
  • Student Learning Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday February 13th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Parents should only book a time if they have concerns about their child’s progress. There are limited spots available and they are individual conferences so space is very limited for concerned parents. Student Learning Conferences will also take place on Wednesday February 14th form 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM however; the teachers will be calling parents for a meeting during that time only. We encourage parents to continue to regularly monitor your child’s progress utilizing Home Logic to review your child’s  assessments and teacher comments.
  • Please note that students will be dismissed at 11:50 am on Tuesday February 13th and there is no school on February 14th. Students will also have February 15th & 16th off as this is Teachers’ Convention and there is no school on Monday February 19th in Celebration of Family Day.
